Telehealth in a Post-PHE World
Summary:
The COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE) was accompanied by several waivers and flexibilities that removed many of the barriers to telehealth. The PHE has been extended in 90-day increments since the PHE began in 2020, but was recently announced that it will officially to come to an end on May 11, 2023.
Objectives:
- Describe at least three ways in which HIPAA intersects with telehealth.
- List key considerations when conducting a HIPAA risk assessment in the context of a telehealth visit.
- Tell about other temporary flexibilities and waivers related to telehealth that will expire at the end of the PHE and describe some of the key implications for hospitals and providers.
